Grinnell Women Fall 66–42 at UW–Platteville
The Grinnell College women’s basketball team lost 66–42 on the road at the University of Wisconsin–Platteville on Saturday. The game was played at Williams Fieldhouse in Platteville, Wisconsin. Grinnell is now 2–6 on the season, while Platteville improved to 6–1.
Platteville led the entire way. Grinnell stayed close in the first quarter and trailed 16–10 after the opening period. In the second quarter, Grinnell scored 13 points but went into halftime down 35–23. Platteville took control in the third quarter, outscoring Grinnell 14–8 to push the lead to 49–31. The home team added 17 more points in the fourth quarter to finish the 24-point win.
Grinnell struggled to shoot the ball. The Pioneers made 13 of 50 shots from the field for 26 percent. They went 5 of 23 from three-point range, which is 21.7 percent. At the free-throw line, Grinnell finished 11 of 17 for 64.7 percent. Platteville shot 37.3 percent from the field, including 7 of 23 from beyond the arc, and made 15 of 18 free throws.
Two players shared the scoring lead for Grinnell. Nora Lynch scored 9 points, hitting three three-pointers. Cassidy Pak also scored 9 points, with a perfect 5-for-5 night from the free-throw line.
Kelsey Ericksen and Juniper Schwartzman each added 6 points. Ericksen made two early three-pointers to help Grinnell stay close in the first half. Schwartzman also led the team with 5 rebounds.
Ava Wu scored 4 points and added 3 rebounds while running the offense. Skylar Thomas, Megan Walters, and Carolyn Pierce each scored 2 points. Amelia Rigel and Eleanor Cordes each added 1 point. Grinnell finished with 34 rebounds in the game.
Platteville had a balanced attack on offense. Ella Mackiewicz led all scorers with 12 points. Madalyn Reichmann and Barb Kling each scored 8 points. Ashley Weir added 5 points and grabbed a game-high 7 rebounds. Platteville’s bench made a big difference, outscoring Grinnell’s bench 37–15.
Grinnell was hurt by second-chance points and scoring in the paint. Platteville held a 42–34 edge in rebounds and doubled up Grinnell 28–14 in points near the basket. Platteville also scored 20 points on second-chance plays.
Grinnell will return to conference play looking to build on the positive moments from the first half and work toward more consistent scoring as the season continues.
