GRINNELL HIRES MATT REED AS ASSISTANT FOOTBALL COACH/RECRUITING COORDINATOR

Grinnell College Athletics

GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College football coach Jeff Pedersen ’02 has announced Matt Reed as the team’s new assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

Reed, who will work with quarterbacks and running backs, spent the past three seasons at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill. He served as wide receivers coach during a time in which many school records were broken in the receiving department.

“We’re extremely excited to add Matt to the staff,” said Pedersen. “He’s an exciting young coach with a bright offensive mind and a proven track record of recruiting to the Midwest Conference.

“This is a new position for us, and we’re extremely grateful for the vision of Director of Athletics Andy Hamilton in creating it, as well as Dean Mike Latham and President Kington in approving the position. This is a tremendous show of support for our football program, and athletics as a whole. The department has made some great hires this spring, and the excitement is palpable.”

Prior to Knox, Reed spent two seasons coaching wide receivers at Maine Maritime, a New England Football Conference affiliate. Reed also assisted with the quarterbacks during his time in Castine, Maine, while developing the passing game on offense.

Reed played both quarterback and wide receiver at the D-II and D-III levels in college.  His career began at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., where he was the quarterback, a wide receiver and a specialist before transferring to play the quarterback position at Castleton University in Vermont.  Reed was also a catcher and infielder on the Castleton baseball team, which advanced to the 2010 NCAA Division III regional playoff round.

A native of Amherst, N.H., Reed earned a bachelor’s degree in business studies and sport management, along with a master’s degree in sports coaching and psychology.

“I am very excited to join the Grinnell football family,” said Reed. “This is an exciting new position and I am ready to take on this opportunity. I had a tremendous experience at Knox College working for Damon Tomeo, where I grew immensely as a coach. I am grateful for coach Pedersen and the Grinnell staff for providing me this opportunity to be a part of their family. I look forward to joining the Grinnell community. I cannot wait to get to work!”
