Fremont Secondary Road Building Highlights Supervisors Meeting

Mahaska County Supervisors for September 6, 2011

Oskaloosa, Iowa – Because of the holiday weekend, the Mahaska County Supervisors had their regular meeting on Tuesday, September 6.

The Supervisors were presented an option to help MCRF (Mahaska County Recreation Foundation) get a CAT grant that it has applied for. The state agency looks at community involvement and support in determining what projects get what funds. One of the points brought up last time was some matching fund dollars from Mahaska County and also the City of Oskaloosa. Each entity would be looked at to supply $40,000 dollars in funds with a total of $80,000 between the two entities, making up a total of 10% of the estimated $800,000 grant MCRF could receive to go towards the new stadium, and the continuing work at the complex.

MCRF says they are continuing to promote the complex to draw other tournaments with which they have had some success, and they want to add more. These tournaments mean dollars for the City and County, and are a selling point for the community for future businesses and professionals.

The board approved the request for $40,000 with $20,000 to come from the 2012 budget and the remaining balance to come from the 2013 budget.

Jerry Nusbaum brought before the board issues with the Fremont facility for the Secondary Road Department. The current facility has one wall that is near failure. They are in the beginning process of looking to show up the building, and then possibly expand the facility by an additional ten feet to allow use of modern equipment. Most modern equipment is larger than what was constructed and used over 50 years ago when the old facility was built.

Nusbaum said he would look to into getting the property near the current Fremont location settled, and then look to procure more land in order to expand the current shop area in an effort to prevent further damage.

Also from the Secondary Roads was an application for a grant for the Horizontal Curve Sign Program. This program could provide up to $10,000 to help purchase signs used to warn drivers about curves on the roadways.

Also signed were 28E agreements with University Park, Beacon and Eddyville for the Mahaska County Sheriff’s office providing law enforcement coverage to those communities.

The board went into closed session in accordance with Iowa Code sec. 21.5(2)(a)-(k) over a personnel matter at the Secondary Roads Department.

The final item on the agenda was a Public Meeting over Ordinance #131 – Voting Precincts. With opening of the public hearing, no others were present beyond the media on hand, and with no written comments, the board closed the public hearing. The new ordinance passed. The second and third readings on this will be September 19th, so the new districts can be sent into the state by October 1.
