Fremont Man Injured In Semi/Tractor Accident

On Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at approximately 8:25 am, members of the Mahaska County Sheriffs Office were dispatched to the 3000 block of Hwy 23, in rural Mahaska County, regarding a vehicle accident involving a semi-tractor/trailer and a farm tractor.

Upon official’s arrival, it was discovered that 2016 Case IH farm tractor had been traveling westbound on Hwy. 23. A 2015 Freightliner semi tractor/trailer was also traveling westbound on Hwy. 23. The driver of the Freightliner reported that he had fallen asleep and rear-ended the farm tractor.

The driver of the Freightliner, 54-year-old Douglas Young of Ottumwa, Iowa was uninjured in the accident. This semi was owned by Adrian Trucking out of Richland, Iowa and was loaded with grain at the time of the accident. The damage to the semi is estimated at $40,000.

The driver of the farm tractor, 58-year-old Bruce Caves of Fremont, Iowa suffered injuries to his back and was transported to the Mahaska Health Hospital by ambulance. The tractor was owned by the City of Fremont. The damage to the tractor is estimated at $60,000.

The investigation into this matter is continuing and traffic charges are pending against Young. The Sheriffs Office was assisted in this matter by members ofthe Cedar Township Fire Department, the Mahaska Health ambulance service, the Iowa Department of Transportation and the Mahaska County Dispatch Center.
