Lakeland, Fla.–The sun was shining, just not on the Statesmen softball team this week as William Penn concluded its Spring Break by being swept in non-conference action Thursday.

The Statesmen (3-8) lost to Southeastern by scores of 10-4 and 3-1.

The host Fire (15-7), who are also receiving votes nationally, scored the game’s first four runs with two in the first and one each in the second and third.

WPU responded by matching its best frame of the week, getting four runs across in the fourth. Jorden Steele (Sr., Tacoma, Wash., Exercise Science) highlighted the inning with a two-run double, while Bri Zerley (Sr., Monroe, Iowa, Biology) and Sydney Edwards (Sr., Galesburg, Ill., Psychology & Biology) both managed run-scoring singles.

Unfortunately, Southeastern had a quick and powerful answer with a two-home run, six-run bottom half to cap the scoring. Zerley finished 2-for-3 and Steele had two RBIs as William Penn was outhit 11-6.

Brittanee Grove (Sr., Runnells, Iowa, Elementary Education) toed the rubber for the start and later on came in again, giving up just two earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. Reliever Paige Miguel (Jr., Hollister, Calif., Exercise Science) collected the loss to fall to 0-3 on the year.

The navy and gold scored their lone run of the nightcap in the fourth when Zerley singled home Grove. Steele had a two-hit showing as the squad lost that battle 6-4.

Lunden Young (Sr., Lewiston, Idaho, Physical Education) pitched well in the nightcap, but could not keep her team’s lead in permitting one run in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth.

The senior (2-4) struck out two and walked two in a two-earned run effort.

The Statesmen had the tying run on base in the seventh, but failed to bring anyone across home plate.

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa next Friday for its first home games, hosting two separate foes as part of the William Penn Classic. The Statesmen meet Culver-Stockton (Mo.) at 3 p.m. and Michigan-Dearborn at 7 p.m. The Classic will be held at the Lacey Complex.
