Farm Bill/Crop Insurance Discussion to be held

Deadlines for farmers are fast approaching with sign up for the 2022 Farm Programs ending March 15. March 15 is also the date for crop insurance decisions. Join Charles Brown, ISU Extension and Outreach Farm Management Specialist, for a short presentation on farm program choices, crop insurance and a demonstration of the farm program tool on Ag Decision Maker. Following the presentation, the meeting will be open for discussion and questions on Tuesday February 22 at 10 am at the Mahaska County Extension office; 212 North I Street, Oskaloosa. There is no cost to attend. Registration is not required but appreciated. For more information or to register, contact Suzette Striegel at 641-673-5841, or e-mail striegel@iastate.edu.

The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (2018 Farm Bill) reauthorized the ARC, ARC-IC and PLC programs with modifications for the 2019 through 2023 crop years. The ARC Program is an income support program that provides payments when actual crop revenue declines below a specified guarantee level. The ARC-IC is based on a farmer’s own yields, not county yields. The PLC Program provides income support payments when the effective price for a covered commodity falls below its effective reference price. There are 22 covered commodities. Farmers can now make changes to their farm program sign up on a yearly basis.

There are additional crop insurance products (SC0 and ECO) farmers can add to their underlying crop insurance policy. Some of these are affected by which farm program you sign up for.

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Farm Management Team strives to improve the quality of life in Iowa by providing research-based educational programs that expand agricultural businesses and improve natural resource management.

If you are unable to attend or have questions prior to the session, please contact Charles Brown at 515-240-9214 or crbrown@iastate.edu.
