Evelyn Bates, 100 of Montezuma passed away Monday morning, September 21, 2015 at the Montezuma Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Evelyn Marguerite Bates, the daughter of Cleve and Blanche (McAdams) Mohr, was born on September 11, 1915 near Victor, Iowa.

Evelyn was a 1932 graduate of Deep River High School. On February 1, 1938, Evelyn was united in marriage to Ronald Bates in the Oskaloosa Methodist Parsonage. To this union one daughter, Barbara, was born.

Ronald and Evelyn farmed in the Deep River area before moving to Montezuma in 1956. Evelyn worked at the Montezuma Extension Office, Smith and Bryan Law Office, and Sig Manufacturing Company in Montezuma. During her retirement, she worked at Malzuma and also the Montezuma Sale Barn for several years.

Evelyn was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed visits from family and friends. Faith was also very important to her. She was a Charter Member of the Community Hope Church in Montezuma.

Evelyn’s memory will be honored by her daughter, Barbara (& Jerry) Minner of Malcom; two grandchildren: Randy (& Rhonda) Minner of Malcom and Brenda (& Gary) Smith of Malcom; five great grandchildren: Rance Minner, Peter (& Kyra) Smith, Raschelle (& Daniel) Wurzer, Amber Smith, and Rebecca (& Luke) Bailey; 8 great-great grandchildren; and two sisters: Grace Keller of Ocala, Florida and Hazel Starkey of Beaverton, Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ronald Bates; a brother, Phillip Mohr; and five sisters: Frances Mullen, Ellna Ochs, Bernice Oats, Maxine McLain and Margery Weidow.

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at the Community Hope Church in Montezuma.
A private family burial will be held in the Pleasant Township Cemetery at Ewart.
A visitation/luncheon will be held immediately following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Community Hope Church.
