Evelyn Alice Vratney, 83, of Oskaloosa died Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born June 3, 1939, in Jersey City, New Jersey, the daughter of Albert and Margaret Curley Ludwig.

Evelyn was united in marriage to James D. Vratney. To this union four children were born, Peter, James, Bonnie, and Connie.

In addition to caring for her own family, she and James took in many foster children over the years. As her children became more independent, she took a job selling advertising for area newspapers and radio stations. She also worked as a seamstress and operated her own upholstery business. For the past several years she has enjoyed the companionship of Michael Williams. She enjoyed quilting, playing cards, camping.

She is survived by her companion, Michael Williams of Oskaloosa; her children: Peter Vratney, James (& Sharon) Vratney and Bonnie Harding. Sixteen grandchildren: Jennifer (& Josh) Harris, Peter Wayne Vratney II, Shane Vratney, Priscilla (& D’Wayne) Brace, Jeremy (& Lyndsey) Vratney, Damara Zahn, Albert Vratney, Wade Vratney, James Vratney, Seth (& Lacie) Vratney, Caleb Vratney, Eli Vratney, Michael Vratney, Alliya Vratney, Melissa Hogan, and Matthew Shepherd; twenty great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and many longtime friends.

In addition to her husband James, Evelyn was preceded in death by her daughter, Connie; her parents; and two sisters, Anna May and Alberta; her great grandson Ayden Frail; and special friend, Charles Bosack.

A memorial service will be held Friday, September 2, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Troy Richmond officiating.
As was Evelyn’s wish her body has been cremated. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
