Erma Noel

Erma Grace Noel, 91, of Greenville, SC and formerly of Oskaloosa, IA, died Wednesday, August 31, 2011, at the McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville, South Carolina. She was born in Mahaska Co. on October 11, 1919, the daughter of the late Cliff P and Fern Hatcher Phillips. She graduated from Mahaska County Rural Schools and then from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1937. She taught country school for a year. On May 6, 1939 she was united in marriage to Howard K. Noel at Little Brown Church of Nashua, Iowa. Howard died December 15, 1995. They farmed together in the Rose Hill and New Sharon area from 1939 until moving from the farm December of 1959. She was employed as a Floor Supervisor at the William Penn College kitchen, until 1972, she then took the position as the Food Service Director for the Oskaloosa Public School System until her retirement in 1982.

Upon her retirement they spent several winters in Florida. She was a long time member of the First Christian Church and a member of the Esther Group at the church; she was also a member of the Oskaloosa Women’s Club and the Pythian Sisters. She enjoyed ceramics, embroidery and reading.

She is survived by her daughter Jean Binns of Greenville, SC and her grandchildren: Marty McNevin (Scott), Wayland IA; Matt Malin (Julie), Boone, IA; Anne Calkins, Iowa City, IA; Mitzi Gellman, Wayland, IA; Sarah Binns and Shannon Binns, Charlotte, NC; Laura Taylor, Gaffney SC; 13 great-grandchildren; 3 Sisters: Helen Phillips, Oskaloosa, Lois Putnam, Eldora, Velma Wee, Pennsylvania; and a Brother: Wayne Phillips, Oskaloosa.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, and two daughters Barbara K Malin and Marjorie I Malin.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at 11 a.m. in the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Andrea Brownlee officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will open Monday morning after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 2-4 Monday afternoon to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa.
