Dennis Shearer, 65, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, February 25, 2017, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born October 27, 1951, in Buffalo, New York, the son of Lawrence and Mildred Hardy Shearer.

Dennis graduated from Cardinal Dougherty High School with the class of 1969. Following graduation, he served in the United States Navy from August of 1969 until his honorable discharge in June of 1973.

Upon his discharge from the Navy Dennis returned to Buffalo. On June 16, 1979, he was united in marriage to Jeneane Davis in Buffalo.

Early on Dennis worked at Houdaille Hydraulics in Buffalo. He later worked as a painter at Richway Refinishing. In 1997, the family moved to Oskaloosa and Dennis worked at Warwick Woods. In 2010, he went to work at Jeld Wen in Grinnell, retiring from there in 2015.

Dennis was a talented woodworker and carpenter, he enjoyed working on renovation projects in his home. He also enjoyed camping, hiking, reading (especially history), feeding the birds and the squirrels in the yard, and staying up on current events. He was a baseball fanatic and especially liked to cheer for the New York Yankees. Dennis’ life centered around his family, he looked forward to having them around for holidays and special occasions.

His family includes his wife of over 37 years, Jeneane Shearer of Oskaloosa; three children: Michael Shearer of Oskaloosa, Sarah (& James) Feldman of Des Moines, and Brian (& Robin) Shearer of Omaha, Nebraska; five grandchildren: Skyler, Kathleena, Makaya, Taylor, and Madeline to be born in May; and a sister, Kathleen Siragusa of Oskaloosa.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Deztiny; and a brother, Larry Shearer.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 28, 2017, at 6 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
Military honors will be performed at the funeral chapel following the funeral ceremony.
As was Dennis’ wish his body will be cremated following the funeral. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Tuesday after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 4 p.m. until service time at 6 to greet friends and relatives.
