Crash on Highway 92 Sends Multiple People to Hospital

A two-vehicle crash on Highway 92 in Mahaska County sent five people to Mahaska Hospital on Wednesday afternoon, according to Iowa Department of Transportation crash records.

The crash was reported at about 3:56 p.m. on Jan. 21 in the 2500 block of Highway 92. Authorities say a 2015 Ford Escape, driven by a 15-year-old from Oskaloosa, was stopped in the eastbound lane waiting to make a left-hand turn into a driveway when the collision occurred.

A 2015 International ProStar commercial truck driven by 49-year-old Martin Neely of Milan, Missouri, was also traveling east on Highway 92 when it struck the rear of the Ford Escape. The impact forced the Escape across the centerline, where it collided head-on with a 2021 Ford Edge driven by 33-year-old Brooke Thurman of Brooklyn, Iowa.

Five people in the Ford Edge and one person in the Ford Escape were injured and taken to Mahaska Hospital by Mahaska Ambulance. Those transported included 48-year-old Claira L. Thurman of Victor; 26-year-old Jordan L. Thurman of Victor; a 13-year-old juvenile from Victor; the 15-year-old Oskaloosa driver; and the Edge’s driver, Brooke M. Thurman. All were reported wearing seatbelts, and records indicate the seatbelts likely prevented more serious injuries.

Driver Neely also was transported to Mahaska Hospital. All occupants of the vehicles were reported to have been using seatbelt restraints at the time of the crash.

No hazardous materials were involved in the collision, despite the involvement of the commercial truck. The truck was affiliated with Sullivan Country Farm Supply of Milan, Missouri, according to the crash report.

The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol, with assistance from local emergency responders and law enforcement.
