Central lands three players of the week
PELLA—Three Central College athletes have received the Iowa Conference player of the week award. Senior Sarah Paulson (Ottumwa) is the women’s golf honoree, senior Chelsea Grieger (Pella) is the volleyball libero/defensive specialist and freshman Eli Horton (Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) is the men’s cross country performer.
Paulson took medalist honors at the Buena Vista Fall Invitational, firing a four-over-par 76 and propelling the Dutch to second-place team finish (344). She topped the field of 63 golfers by four strokes. The final round of the tournament was cancelled because of weather. It was Paulson’s first fall season action in two years after missing the 2010 campaign studying abroad in Europe. Paulson is a two-time league player of the year and has received player of the week honors nine times.
Grieger tallied 91 digs as the Dutch won the Augustana College (Ill.) Viking Classic and compiled a 4-0 overall mark. The two-time all-conference player also had two ace serves and two assists. Grieger has 1,920 career digs, second on Central’s all-time leaderboard behind Maggie Nowicki (2,125 digs, 2005-08). She has been cited four times.
In his collegiate debut, Horton took runner-up honors at the Central Dutch Invitational in a field of 112 runners. His time of 19 minutes, 47 seconds over the 6,000-meter course paced Central to a second-place team finish with 31 points.
