Carroll "Smiley" Kirk

Carroll Glen “Smiley” Kirk, 75, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, September 4, 2011, at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton, Iowa. He was born July 12, 1936, in Mahaska County the son of Carroll and Nellie Gable Kirk. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1953. Following High School he served his country in the United States Army. Following his discharge from the Army he returned to Oskaloosa and worked for Hanson Construction. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and visiting with family and friends.

His family includes his children, Roxanne Snook of Newton, Carroll (& Missy) Sparks of Newton and Tammy Sparks of Colfax, Iowa; 9 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; three sisters: Helen Gregory of Colfax, Gloria Hunt of Newton and Wilma Wyatt of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Kenneth and Willis Kirk; and three sisters: Nellie Green, Mary Alley and Agnes Sparks.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 10, 2011, at 1 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Burial will be in the Wymore Cemetery east of Oskaloosa. Graveside Military Rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion, V.F.W. and D.A.V. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Friday after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Friday evening to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
