Burt Qualifies with School Record at Musco Twilight
Iowa City–Phoebe Burt (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa, Sociology) topped her own school record, and, in the process, also punched her ticket for nationals as the William Penn women’s track and field team competed at the Musco Twilight hosted by Iowa Saturday.
Burt broke her 2022 discus record (141-6) with a toss of 144-8, placing sixth overall, but more importantly, hitting the automatic-qualifying standard. She is WPU’s second national qualifier, joining throwing teammate Erica Martin (Sr., Detroit, Mich., Sports Management) (shot put).
Abigaille Batu-Tiako (Sr., Plattsburgh, N.Y., Business Management) also had a strong showing, placing second in the long jump at 17-5.5.
“Using your elements is something throwers have to learn quickly in the outdoor season,” Head Coach Victoria Vinokur said. “Phoebe Burt did just that, using the wind to her advantage and executing her positions well to make it back to nationals. That has been a big goal of hers after missing out last year and I am so happy for her.”
Next Up: William Penn may look to split its squad next week. Most individuals will head to Indianola Thursday through Saturday to compete in the Simpson Kip Janvrin Open, while some may go to Des Moines on those same days to participate in the Drake Relays.
