Boma, Gonzalez Qualify for Marathon
Atchison, Kan.–Jamal Boma (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa, Business Management and Physical Education) and Guadalupe Gonzalez (Jr., Houston, Texas, Exercise Science) did not waste over an hour of running last Saturday as they both punched their tickets for nationals at the Lewis and Clark Trail Half Marathon hosted by Benedictine.
Boma won his 13.1-mile race (22 competitors) with a time of 1:09:39, while Gonzalez was fourth out of 14 female runners in a time of 1:28:16. Both times eclipsed the NAIA’s automatic-qualifying marks.
While Boma will be making his second trip to nationals this year (also qualified in cross country), Gonzalez earned her first career trip to nationals.
The NAIA’s indoor championships does not offer a half or full marathon in its schedule, so the pair will have to wait until late May for outdoor nationals to compete.
William Penn has now qualified four individuals in five events with Derek Seddon (Sr., Knoxville, Iowa, Physical Education) doing so in the shot put and weight throw and Tristen Elmore (Fr., Ovied, Fla., Physical Education) accomplishing the feat in the high jump.
