Bike To Work Week Commuters

Keomah Village, Iowa – Residents of Keomah Village commuted into Oskaloosa for work early Friday morning. City of Keomah Village Mayor Mark De Jong said the ride was a show of support for the Bike to Work activities sponsored by the Mahaska County Wellness Coalition.

Participants talked about the need to promote healthy activities and raise awareness of what opportunities for additional bike trails in Mahaska County could provide for bike enthusiasts and active families.

Riders left city hall at 6:00 am to try to beat the traffic on Highway 92.

Riders recognized the need for safety, so a support vehicle with flashers followed the riders and, in addition, all the riders wore helmets. Additional residents expressed interest in the event but do to conflicts they could not ride on Friday, but plan to participate next year.

Mayor De Jong said they believe this is the largest group traveling the longest distance in the county in recognition of Bike to Work week. Riders that participated in the ride from Keomah Village to Oskaloosa included those that work at Bank Iowa, Bill and Rays, Mahaska Health Partnership and Oskaloosa Schools.
