Betty J. Douglas Green, 83, of Ottumwa and formerly of Creston and Oskaloosa, died Sunday, September 6, 2015, at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa. She was born February 5, 1932, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Donald Dwight and Dorothy Upton Douglas.
Betty graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1950. Following graduation, Betty moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, to be with Herman Green who was up there working in the gold mines. In 1950, the two of them were married in Fairbanks.
While in Alaska, Betty worked as a cook at the air force base. In 1952, the family moved to Leighton, Iowa, where they ran the Leighton Store. In 1954, they moved back to Oskaloosa. Betty stayed home and cared for her family and home for a time. Betty and Herman divorced and she re-entered the workforce. She worked various places in Oskaloosa including, Oskaloosa Public Library, Don’s Diner, and Mahaska Manor. Betty also did work as an in home health aide for many years.
Betty was a very active member of the St. James Episcopal Church in Oskaloosa, where she was a member of the Altar Guild. She also belonged to a women’s society in Alaska, and she was active in P.T.A. when her boys were in school. She was a very strong supporter of the Democratic Party, and had served as an election official. She was invited by former President Jimmy Carter to spend a week at his ranch in Plains, Georgia; she thoroughly enjoyed that trip.
Betty enjoyed genealogy, reading, singing, and traveling.
Her family includes five sons: Steve (& Vickie) Green of Arnolds Park, Iowa, Donald (& Kathy Larsen) Green of Oskaloosa, Robert “Bob” (& Janet) Green of Dubuque, Richard Green of Oskaloosa, and Michael “Mick” (& Jackie) Green of Beacon; seven grandchildren: Eric Green, Jennifer Reha, Whitney Black, Donald Green, Jr., Dustin Green, Kristopher Green, and Angela Johnston; and eight great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a grandson, Michael Green, Jr.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 10, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. in the St. James Episcopal Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Meg Wagner officiating.
Burial will be in the White Oak Cemetery southeast of Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Wednesday after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Wednesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
