Blue Zones Project® Oskaloosa announced Mahaska County YMCA as a Blue Zones Worksite® today. Mahaska County YMCA was designated after completing the necessary items in the Blue Zones Worksite Pledge including offering annual biometric screenings for employees, hosting a plant-based cooking class, and supporting micro-breaks to stretch every hour.

Media and the public are invited to celebrate Mahaska County YMCA’s designation and National Food Day on Friday, Oct. 24, at the 2014 Fall Food Festival and Family Fun Night, beginning with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 5 p.m. located in the gym of the YMCA at 414 N. 3rd St in Oskaloosa.

“It is encouraging to see both YMCA members and employees making conscious decisions to follow the suggestions offered by Blue Zones Project,” said Ryan Harkema, the sports, fitness, and aquatics director at Mahaska County YMCA. “Our Blue Zones Project parking spaces were previously underutilized, and now I notice individuals intentionally seeking them out, including myself.”

Dawn Collins, executive director of the YMCA, also serves as the co-chair of Blue Zones Project Oskaloosa’s Power 9, a group of key leaders in Oskaloosa that helped to build the foundation for the Project and establish the Blueprint. When asked what Collins is looking forward to most with the changes implemented within her worksite, she stated, “I’m excited about putting in a staff garden. This has been on our ‘to-do list’ for three years, and it’ll feel great to have it completed and growing next spring!”

National Food Day and the Fall Food Festival and Family Fun Night is an opportunity for local food advocates to provide resources and information about food policies, food awareness, simple and delicious recipes, and access to healthy foods in the community. Mayor Dave Krutzfeldt is one of many leaders in the community to recognize the importance of National Food Day, and showed his support by signing the 2014 Oskaloosa Food Day Proclamation on Friday, October 17
