Grinnell College and other community organizations have earmarked tens of thousands of dollars to help those in the area impacted by paused food aid benefits.

The private university announced in a news release last week it has committed $10,000 to the Grinnell Food Coalition, an initiative within the Claude W. and Dolly Ahrens Foundation that works to address food needs. Insurance company Grinnell Mutual and the Campbell Fund, a trust operated by the city, also donated $10,000 each, according to the release.

Jennifer Cogley, director of programs for the foundation, said Monday the coalition has reached its $50,000 fundraising goal.

“Across Poweshiek County, food pantries and meal programs are already feeling increased demand, and they are working tirelessly to support families who are struggling,” Cogley said in the release. “The Grinnell Food Coalition is committed to uplifting these organizations. We believe it’s essential to work alongside the groups who have their boots on the ground every day, ensuring our neighbors have access to the food they need.”

While benefits for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, are being issued once again after the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, the release stated “many households and local food providers continue to face significant strain as demand for food assistance rises.”

With the funding, the food coalition will distribute “up to” 3,000 $10 vouchers for groceries to those in need across Poweshiek County, according to the release, and bolster area food pantries and other food programs that have seen increased demand. Organizations are also encouraged to apply for emergency food grants through the coalition, as “typical funding limits” will not be applied.

Barb Baker, director of advertising and community relations at Grinnell Mutual, said in the release the donations will hopefully “serve as a springboard for support” for residents and organizations working to help them.

“Grinnell College is glad to be part of a community that pulls together in times of need. We’ve seen this community accomplish amazing things when working together, and we’re proud to collaborate with our partners at Grinnell Mutual to support this emergency response,”  said Monica Chavez-Silva, Grinnell College vice president for community engagement and strategic planning, in the release.
