2012 Southern Iowa Fair Roundup

2012 Southern Iowa Fair

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The 2012 Southern Iowa Fair is now in the History books, and besides some cleaning up, only the memories now remain.

The week started off on Monday with lots of livestock judging and project judging as well. The evening end up with the crowning of Megan Adams as the 2012 Southern Iowa Fair Queen.

Tuesday brought yet more livestock and exhibit judging, and the first of two nights of IMCA Stock Cars to the Southern Iowa Speedway.

By Wednesday, the Fair had hit its stride with people enjoying the many displays, from antique tractors and quilts to Cow Town USA. Visitors could be found checking out some of the local businesses that set up in the Varied Industries Building and underneath the Grandstand, or visiting the livestock barns inspecting the various animals present.

The motors were revving for the second night of IMCA Stock Cars with the bonus Fair payout.

The 2012 4-H and FFA Beef Show kicked off a very hot Thursday at the Fair. Children’s Cookie Decorating Contest, 4-H and Clover Kids Pet Show and Chicken BINGO were all just a sample of the activities one could have taken part in on Thursday.

The BINGO Barn is always a popular event at the Fair, and this year was no different.

Thursday night also brought a first to the Southern Iowa Fair in the form of Figure 8 racing. The racing action was fast and some times a bit scary. The crowd was on the edge of their seats as two drivers collided at the crossover point, lifting the front of one car nearly five feet in the air.

Friday was a much cooler day at the Fair, and featured such things as the 4-H & FFA Horse Show, Children’s Cookie Stacking Contest, and Children’s Bubble Gum Blowing Contest.

The main entertainment of the evening continued on with a replacement opening act, after illness struck Molly Hatchet. The Little River Band played as scheduled.

Saturday was the last day of the Fair, with the exception of harness racing on Sunday and Monday. The Antique Tractor Pull, Diaper Derby, Decorated Diaper Contest, along with the Kiddie Tractor Pull and the Pine Wood Derby Race were part of the day’s activities.

In the evening, country music acts Jason Brown, Sammy Kershaw and Ricochet performed live at the Grandstand.

4-H and FFA Participants worked hard at preparing their livestock and exhibits, and the list of winners are listed in the follow articles. Photos from various events can be found at the links at the bottom of this page.
