OSKALOOSA BOYS WIN NEWTON INVITATIONAL; PARKS TAKES TOP INDIVIDUAL SPOT

NEWTON — The Oskaloosa varsity boys and girls bowling teams traveled to Newton on Saturday, Dec. 6, to compete in the eight-team Newton Invitational.

The Oskaloosa boys won the tournament with 3,156 total pins. Osky finished 40 pins ahead of Waukee (3,116), which won the tournament last year. It was the boys’ first competition of the season.

Oskaloosa also swept the top three individual medal spots. Freshman Colton Parks took first with a 501 two-game series. Parks rolled games of 265 and 236. Marshall Seibert placed second with a 442 series and a high game of 246. Cole VanderWal took third with a 434 series and a high game of 261.

The tournament started with individual games before moving to a five-game baker format. Oskaloosa led by 88 pins after the singles portion. In the first three baker games, the boys struggled and fell behind by 20 pins going into the final two games. Osky answered with a 245 in the fourth baker game to take the lead back, then closed with a 229 in the final game to seal the win.

On the girls side, Oskaloosa finished fifth out of eight teams with 2,030 total pins. Coach Tony Witt said the girls are improving each week and scored better than their first meet, but faced tough competition at the tournament.

Regan Abrahamson led the Oskaloosa girls and placed second individually with a 423 two-game series. Abrahamson also had a high game of 238. Faith Carmer and Paige Vandermeiden also turned in steady performances, each posting a 295 two-game series.
