WPU Suffers First KCAC Loss
Oskaloosa–The William Penn women’s lacrosse team took their first loss in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play, falling to the Ottawa Braves 16-6.
The Braves got on the board early, scoring with only 37 seconds off the clock, but William Penn responded a few minutes later. Kenzington Winget (Fr., West Jordan, Utah, Sports Management) evened the score at 1-1, then Ashlyn Hoffman (So., Bend, Ore., Nursing) gave WPU the lead only a minute later.
Unfortunately, Ottawa controlled the rest of the quarter with three more scores, and entered the second frame leading 4-2. The visitors extended their lead even further, scoring five more times while holding the navy and gold to just a single goal to enter halftime with a 9-3 advantage.
Ottawa opened up the half with two more scores, but MacKenzie Petersen (Jr., Albertville, Minn., Public Accounting) got one back with her first score of the day. It was the only goal of the quarter for the Statesmen, however, as the Braves added two more to make it 13-4. THe big hole was too much to overcome in the fourth quarter as Ottawa took the victory.
Hoffman led with her two scores, with the other goals coming from Winget, Petersen, Bailee Royal (Jr., Hallsville, Texas, Sports Management), and Emily Ferguson (So., Waterloo, N.Y., Exercise Science). Ferguson also won five draw controls, with Cher Stoup (Fr., San Diego, Calif., Nursing) winning four and Hoffman coming out on top of three.
What’s Next: The Statesmen are back in action this Saturday as they have a road matchup against the Concordia Cardinals in Davenport, Iowa. That contest is scheduled to begin at 4 PM.
