WPU Denied Upset of Concordia (Mich.)

Davenport–The Statesmen women’s lacrosse team was in the thick of it at the halfway point Saturday, but could not keep up with its foe in the latter stages in a 21-10 non-conference loss to Concordia (Mich.).

In a matchup that featured a pair of lightning delays, William Penn (2-3) briefly caught said lightning in its proverbial bottle, trailing just 12-9 at halftime. Unfortunately, the Cardinals (1-3), who are unofficially 11th in the NAIA, pulled away in the second half, led by a 37-17 edge in shots and a 21-7 advantage in draw-control wins.

The squads, playing on a neutral field hosted by St. Ambrose, combined for eight scores in the first 15 minutes with CUAA leading 5-3. The next period was even more exciting as 13 balls found the netting with the Cardinals pulling ahead by three at intermission.

The final half, however, was dominated by Concordia with nine of the 10 goals going in its favor.

Bailee Royal (Jr., Hallsville, Texas, Sports Management) topped the navy and gold with three goals, while MacKenzie Petersen (Jr., Albertville, Minn., Public Accounting) was a part of three scores as well (one goal, two assists).

The trio of Ashlyn Hoffman (So., Bend, Ore., Nursing), Emily Ferguson (So., Waterloo, N.Y., Exercise Science), and Jenna Donlan (Jr., Tampa, Fla., Business Management) all tacked on two goals each Saturday.

Madison Reed (Jr., Shakopee, Minn., Secondary Education) attempted to keep the contest close with 16 saves in front of the cage.

Next Up: William Penn returns to Davenport Tuesday to face St. Ambrose in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play at 5 p.m.
