William Penn’s Torren Jones Honored as NAIA Division I Player of the Week
Oskaloosa–Torren Jones (Sr., Chandler, Ariz., Sociology) was not only the best player in his league last week, but the best cager in all of NAIA Division I as he was named the Men’s Basketball National Player of the Week Tuesday.
Jones is the program’s first NAIA POW winner since Brandon Beasley was tabbed for the recognition on February 12, 2013. He averaged a double-double of 23.3 points and 14.0 rebounds to help #2 William Penn (25-3, 21-3 Heart) clinch the Heart of America Athletic Conference regular season title.
The owner of an NAIA-leading 22 double-doubles, the senior recorded three more last week, including a 34-point, 18-rebound showing against Graceland Saturday. In the win, he was 14-for-15 from the floor; he shot 80.0% for the week (28-for-35), made both of his three-pointers, and was 12-for-15 at the free-throw line.
Jones, who finished with five assists, three steals, and one block as well, is averaging 19.7 points and 12.4 rebounds this campaign. He also has 33 assists, 24 steals, and 20 blocks to his credit. The post sensation is shooting 54.1% from the field and 73.1% from the charity stripe.
Jones currently ranks in the top 20 nationally in numerous categories, highlighted by being first in NAIA Division I in total rebounds (334), rebounds per game (12.4), and defensive rebounds per game (8.6). He is also third in offensive rebounds per game (3.7), 10th in total scoring (531), and 13th in both points per game and field-goal percentage.
