William Penn Gives Up Two Late in Loss to Northwestern

Oskaloosa–The Lady Statesmen soccer team came up a bit short Saturday night, falling 3-1 to Northwestern in non-league play.

William Penn (1-7) trailed 1-0 at halftime after the Raiders (3-2-1) scored in the 39th minute.

Kirsty Fraser (Jr., Perth, Australia, Elementary Education) knotted up the contest at the 62:50 mark, however, as she found netting on a long bomb from the left side. It was the first goal of her Lady Statesmen career.

The contest would not remain tied for long, though, with Northwestern scoring the go-ahead goal in the 70th minute and then an insurance score with 1:16 left on the clock.

William Penn was outshot 18-9 with Fraser tying Silvia Munoz (Fr., Paramount, Calif., Elementary Education) for the team lead with three shots. Amber Klootwyk (Fr., Knoxville, Iowa, Business Management/Education) tallied five saves.

“I am delighted with the effort our ladies gave tonight and our ability to follow the game plan we set,” Head Coach Willie McGowan said. “Losing on a couple late goals leaves a little bitterness in the mouth, but we should take a lot of positives away from this game. We worked hard for each other throughout and did not sit back and only defend.”

Next: William Penn travels to Omaha, Neb. Tuesday to face College of St. Mary in non-conference action at 4 p.m.
