Statesmen 19th in Season Finale
Indianapolis, Ind.–The Penn men’s bowling team concluded its regular season with a very strong showing at the Backhaul Direct-Hoosier Classic last Saturday and Sunday.
Penn tied Vincennes (Ill.) for 19th (out of 76 teams) with 8,573 pins in nine regular games at the Tier 1 event. Wichita State (Kan.) won the team title with 9,285 pins, 184 ahead of runner-up Robert Morris (Ill.).
TJ Schmidt of Purdue (Ill.) won the individual crown with a 222.9 average (2,006 pins).
Sean Rangel (So., Omaha, Neb., Bellevue East HS) paced the Statesmen in 22nd place, owning a 201.0 average (1,809 pins).
James Miller (Sr., Oswego, Ill., Vincennes) also had a top-50 finish, tying for 38th with a 197.1 clip.
Cameron Foster (Fr., West Jordan, Utah, West Jordan HS) averaged 192.2 pins and Drew Balta (Fr., Walford, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS) posted a 178.3 average. The team’s top four scorers each rolled in all nine games.
Andrew Zaug (So., Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS), with a 192.4 average in five games, and Piet Schaeffer (Fr., Livingston, Scotland, The James Young HS), with a 173.3 mark in four games, also competed for Penn.
Next: Penn, who is ranked #26 on collegebowling.com, has earned a berth in its first-ever postseason. The Statesmen will compete in the USBC Team Sectionals on March 11-13. The four sectional sites are Allentown, Pa., Chattanooga, Tenn., Peoria, Ill., and Euless, Texas with participating teams at each site to be determined.
Lady Statesmen End Regular Season at Hoosier Classic
Indianapolis, Ind.–The Penn women’s bowling team finished its regular season with another quality performance at the Backhaul Direct-Hoosier Classic last Saturday and Sunday.
Penn finished 21st (out of 44 teams) with 7,739 pins in nine regular games at the Tier 1 event. Central Florida won the team title with 8,725 pins, holding off Wichita State (Kan.) by only 88 pins (8,637 pins).
Jazreel Tan of Wichita State won the individual crown with a 207.9 average (1,871 pins).
Breanne Underwood (Sr., Treynor, Treynor HS) was high on the leaderboard for Penn, placing 26th with a 186.7 average (1,680 pins).
Amanda Kilts (Fr., Cedar Rapids, Cedar Rapids Jefferson HS) and Samantha Powell (So., Herriman, Utah, Bingham HS) were in the top 100 as well. Kilts was 59th with a 176.2 clip and Powell was 62nd with a 174.1 mark.
Abigayle Wempen (So., Titonka, North Iowa HS) was also a nine-game bowler, owning a 160.9 average.
Kirstin Newberry (Fr., Holland, Mich., West Ottawa HS) picked up 169.0 pins per game in five games, while Amanda Edenholm (So., Marysville, Wash., Marysville-Pilchuck HS) had a 153.0 tally in three games.
Leah Early (So., Cedar Rapids, Cedar Rapids Jefferson HS) bowled in one game with a score of 154.
