WPU Drops Year’s First Dual Meet 38-6

Kirksville, Mo.–The Statesmen wrestling team just could not get its proverbial wheels moving in a 38-6 dual meet loss to NCAA Division II Truman Thursday.

Heavyweight Nathan Veverka (Sr., Montezuma, Iowa, Industrial Technology) was the team’s lone winner, pinning Ben Dudley in 2:08 to conclude the evening.

125-pounder Andrew Gorman (Fr., Madison Heights, Mich., Business Management), 141-pounder Marshawn Lacy (Jr., Chicago, Heights, Ill., Computer Science), 157-pounder Christian Padilla (Jr., Tampa, Fla., Secondary Education), and 184-pounder Joe Sumner (Sr., Delaware, Ohio, Physical Education) were also competitive Thursday, dropping their matches by decision.

Next: William Penn travels to Indianola Saturday to compete in the Simpson Invitational.

Three Pick Up Scholar-Athlete Awards

Oskaloosa–Three Statesmen women’s soccer players were honored for their excellence in the classroom as they were named 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athletes Friday.

Kirsty Fraser (Sr., Perth, Australia, Elementary Education), Leslie Hernandez (Sr., Bolingbrook, Ill., Biology), and Emmanuela Meneide (Sr., Turks and Caicos, Biology) were among a list of 507 women’s soccer players from within the NAIA to be awarded the laurel.

Hernandez leads the trio with a 3.79 Grade Point Average, while Fraser is next at 3.60. The accolade is the second for Hernandez. Meneide entered this fall with a 3.54 GPA.

To be eligible for the award, athletes must be of at least junior academic standing, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale, and have attended the nominating institution for at least one full academic year.

Bandy, Dryden Recognized for Academic Prowess

Oskaloosa–A pair of William Penn men’s soccer players were honored for their excellence in the classroom as they were named 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athletes Friday.

Mason Bandy (Jr., Calgary, Alberta, Biology) and Mark Dryden (Sr., Arbroath, Scotland, Biology) were among a list of 355 men’s soccer players from within the NAIA to be awarded the laurel.

Bandy is tops with a 3.67 Grade Point Average, while Dryden owns a 3.66 GPA. The accolade is the second for Dryden.

To be eligible for the award, athletes must be of at least junior academic standing, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale, and have attended the nominating institution for at least one full academic year.

Scholar-Athlete Honor for Gutch

Oskaloosa–Ana Gutch (Jr., Eddyville, Iowa, Secondary Education) was honored for her excellence in the classroom as she was named a 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Volleyball Scholar-Athlete Friday.

Gutch, who owns a 3.69 Grade Point Average, was among a list of 391 volleyball players from within the NAIA to be awarded the laurel.

To be eligible for the award, athletes must be of at least junior academic standing, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale, and have attended the nominating institution for at least one full academic year.
