Penalty Kick Goals End Statesmen Season
Des Moines–The Penn men’s soccer team put up a heck of a fight Sunday afternoon, but some tough calls and a very strong opponent prevented the squad from pulling the upset as the Statesmen fell 4-1 to #14 nationally-ranked and top-seeded Grand View in the quarterfinals of the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament.
The Statesmen, seeded #8 in the tourney, end the year at 7-9-2 (2-5-1 MCC). The visitors were outshot 21-5, but three fouls inside their own box resulted in three penalty kick goals for the Vikings which stood as the difference in the contest.
Jonny MacAdam put the first two goals past Statesmen goalkeeper Tadeo Cavazos (Baytown, Texas, Lee HS), one of five Penn seniors playing their final collegiate game. Grand View led 2-0 at halftime.
Tim Eyer (Palos Heights, Ill., Shepard HS), another senior, got Penn on the board at the 61:12 mark, assisted by Daniel Beseau (Fr., Florissant, Mo., Timberland HS). Eyer finished the year with six goals, while Beseau notched two assists.
Unfortunately, the Vikings tacked on two more goals after that (one by MacAdam for the hat trick), including another penalty kick score and cruised to the win. They advance to host #5 seed Viterbo next Sunday in the tournament semis.
Eyer and Mark Dryden (Fr., Arbroath, Scotland, Arbroath HS) led Penn with two shots each.
The 2010 Statesmen senior class included Cavazos, Eyer, Danny Aguerre (Salt Lake City, Utah, Iowa Western CC), Taft Fuller (Portland, Ore., Iowa Western CC), and Eric Razo (Joliet, Ill., Joliet CC).
