Schuler Ends Career at NAIA National Meet
Vancouver, Wash.–Statesmen harrier Kipp Schuler (Sr., Haviland, Kan., Dana) claimed one more lasting memory from his cross country career as he competed at the NAIA Men’s Cross Country National Championships Saturday.
Schuler placed 255th out of 326 runners with a time of 28:10. He is the fifth individual male national qualifier for Penn since the school joined the NAIA in 2001 (team went as regional champions in 2001).
Kennedy Kithuka of Wayland Baptist (Texas) won the individual national championship, completing the 8K course in a time of 24:02, while Southern Oregon held off Wayland Baptist for the team crown, 105-124. Southern Oregon had all five of its scorers finish in the top 50 (all seven runners in top 100).
Schuler is the first Statesmen to qualify for the year’s biggest meet since Blake Wallace did so in 2008.
Penn Competes at Augsburg Open
Oskaloosa–In a tournament that featured over 500 competitors, four Statesmen wrestlers recorded some success as Penn hit the mat at the Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open hosted by Augsburg Saturday.
The Open field was so large that several brackets were needed for each weight with Statesmen in anything from the Gold bracket (top bracket) to the second ‘C’ bracket (fifth or sixth bracket).
141-pounder Tommy Kozak (So., Belleville, Mich., Thiel) and 149-pounder Jason Mozley (Fr., Arlington, Texas, Martin HS) paced Penn as each went 3-1 on the day. Kozak won one match by fall, while Mozley’s big win came by major decision.
Tyler Schneider (Fr., Belleville, Mich., Belleville HS) also won on multiple occasions, going 2-1 at 133 pounds (one fall, one major decision).
Next: Penn is off until after the holiday break, returning to action on Wednesday, December 1. The team travels to Forest City to face Waldorf in dual-meet action at 7 p.m.
