Penn Hits Century Mark for First Time in 17 Seasons in 108-82 Win

Lamoni–The Lady Statesmen cagers began what is expected to be a very exciting and fast-paced campaign with a 108-82 victory against Graceland in non-conference action Monday.

Penn (1-0) reached 100 points for the 14th time in program history and the first time since a 103-62 win over Cornell in the 1993-1994 season.  It is also the highest single-game tally since putting up 113 points in a 113-73 win over Buena Vista in 1986-1987.

Finally, the 190 combined points are second all-time only to the 201 points the Lady Statesmen and Central put on the scoreboard in a 119-82 Dutch win in 2000-2001.

Christa Subbert (Sr., Stanton, Stanton HS) began her senior campaign with a team-best 20 points on 6-of-13 shooting (2-of-3 3-PT, 6-of-8 FT).  Subbert was a beast on the defensive end as well, tallying a career-high seven steals (Penn had 16 overall).

Arielle McClellan (Jr., Fontana, Calif., Chaffey CC) had a terrific navy and gold debut as well, scoring 16 points off the bench (6-of-8 FG).

Carleigh Hobson (Sr., Lancaster, Calif., Antelope Valley CC), with 12 points, and Samantha Darley (Sr., Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa HS), with 11 points, also reached double figures.  Fifteen different players scored in the hockey ‘line shift’ offense that is geared to imitate the famous Grinnell College men’s basketball offensive scheme.

Penn won the shooting battle 55.4%-33.3% and went to the free-throw line 40 times, making 28 of those attempts.

April Wilbur (Jr., Rosamond, Calif., Chaffey CC) posted seven points, while Orielle Thomas (Fr., Waynesville, Mo., Waynesville HS) contributed six points and a team-high five rebounds.

The up-tempo style gave both teams fits with Penn committing 25 turnovers and the Yellowjackets making 28 mistakes.

“This was a great first game for us,” Lady Statesmen Head Coach Brian Spielbauer said.  “It was a very balanced team effort.  We did a good job of finding Christa and Arielle in transition and capitalizing on those chances.  Everyone played well and hopefully this is just the start of what we are going to do this year.”

Next: Penn travels to Peru, Neb. Thursday to face Peru State in non-conference play at 5:30 p.m.

Two Already Meet Qualifying Marks at Season-Opening NIACC Open

Mason City–Freshmen Eric Burgey (Easton, Pa., Easton HS) and Brandon Smith (Malcom, BGM HS) both had great starts to their collegiate careers as the Penn wrestling team began its season at the NIACC-Kaye Young Open last Saturday.

Burgey, who redshirted a year ago, lost his opening match at 149 pounds to the eventual runner-up, but then reeled off five straight wins, including two by fall, two by technical fall, and one by major decision to place third overall.

Smith had a somewhat similar road, winning his first contest by fall, but then falling to the consolation bracket with a loss to the eventual 157-pound champion.  From there, the true freshman notched three straight victories (all by decision) before falling in the third-place match to end the day at 4-2.

By posting such strong performances, both have already earned their way to the NAIA Wrestling National Championships in March.

Taylor Louie (Sr., West Covina, Calif., West Covina HS), who was 2-2 at 125 pounds (one major decision), and Joe Sumner (Fr., Delaware, Ohio, Rutherford B. Hayes HS), who was also 2-2 at 174 pounds (one fall), reached multiple victories as well.  Sumner started his day with back-to-back wins to advance to the semifinals before falling to the eventual champion.

Next: Penn takes a week off before traveling to Mitchell, S.D. on Saturday, November 13 to compete in the Dakota Wesleyan Open.  Action begins at 9 a.m.

Lady Statesmen Swept on Senior Night
Oskaloosa–The Penn volleyball team wanted to send its 2010 senior class out in style but Grand View had other plans as the Lady Statesmen fell 3-0 to the Vikings in Midwest Collegiate Conference action Monday.

Penn (23-20, 4-4 MCC), who lost by scores of 14-25, 22-25, 18-25, will now be the #5 seed in the MCC Tournament and will face #4 seed Clarke Saturday in Dubuque at 7 p.m. (time is tentative).

Five seniors played the final regular season home match of their collegiate careers and although the Lady Statesmen did not come away victorious, the night was extra special for two players, Caitlin Hadden (Sr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) and Krista Pettit (Sr., Grundy Center, Grundy Center HS), as both reached personal milestones.

Already the school record holder for digs, Hadden posted 14 more Monday night, eclipsing the 3,000 mark (now at 3,001), while Pettit had 11 assists to surpass the 2,000 plateau (now at 2,005).

The trio of Morgan Bailey (Sr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS), Brittany Rohling (Jr., Thayer, Kan., Neosho CC), and Jeanette Cunningham (Fr., Mt. Orab, Ohio, Western Brown HS) all recorded six kills to lead Penn offensively.  The home team was outhit .227-.047.

Katherine Stumberg (Jr., Williamsburg, Williamsburg HS) had a team-high 13 assists with three aces, while Bailey and Cunningham each had two block assists (Rohling had one solo and one assist).

Emily Stanton (Sr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) ended her night with four kills and 13 digs.
