We Talk With Dr. Hannah Thompson From Mahaska Health About Staying Healthy This Time Of The Year

Oskaloosa, Iowa – We recently had a chance to ask Dr. Hannah Thompson from Mahaska Health a few questions about how to stay healthy during this holiday season. She was gracious enough to share some of her pointers about maintaining your health during this time of the year.

I started off by asking her about how the pandemic may seem behind us but I wanted to know what we can do to help protect our family and loved ones during this time.

Dr. Thompson, “Respiratory illness season is still in full gear! We have seen a significant uptick in the RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) and influenza cases. I think being mindful and attending family gatherings is important this Christmas- if you’re not feeling well, please avoid new babies, the immunocompromised, and the elderly, as they are the most at risk. Washing hands and getting good rest is essential this time of year.”

We have all been feeling the chill of winter in Iowa, and I asked Dr. Thompson how we can best protect ourselves from falls and frostbite during this time of the year.

Dr. Thompson, “Winter has arrived! If you plan to go outside, it’s important to ensure you have appropriate cold-weather gear- hats, gloves, and a good winter coat. To prevent falls, using assisted walking devices if necessary and salting driveways/steps are essential.”

The next step is to better understand how to protect ourselves during the winter when we normally spend a large amount of time indoors. Things like screens and vaccinations and how they play a role in keeping us healthy.

Dr. Thompson, “Mahaska Health and local pharmacies are stocked up with influenza vaccinations. Those who receive the influenza vaccine often experience less severe and shorter flu-like symptoms if they contract it. Patients older than 65 years of age qualify for a high-dose influenza vaccine. Other important vaccinations include the pneumococcal vaccine if you are eligible.”

I’m a sucker for the treats around the holidays, and the temptation to indulge yourself is always just around the corner, and we’re not always the most active physically during this time. How do we enjoy those treats but still maintain a healthy lifestyle?

Dr. Thompson, “My tip for the holiday season is “everything in moderation.” Don’t deprive yourself of holiday favorites; recognize when you’re full and adjust your portions appropriately. With the cold outside, it’s often hard to exercise. The Penn Central Mall is great for walking and burning off some of those holiday calories!”

This time of the year can also bring about extra stress and, at times, depression as we miss a loved one or have faced financial or social obstacles this past year.

Dr. Thompson, “The holidays can be a very hard time for those who have lost loved ones or are struggling with chronic illness. I challenge my fellow community members to check in on their neighbors, friends, or family who is experiencing loss or loneliness this season. Can you make a meal to drop off for someone who has recently lost a family member? Share a coffee with a friend who lives alone. Let’s be mindful of others’ experiences and work to bring a smile to someone’s face this season.”

One last thought from Dr. Hannah Thompson as we all face crazy schedules and we try to balance all of the demands of the season. “Plan rest time into your weekly/monthly schedule. If you are the type of person (like me) who cannot say no to things, pencil into your calendar a night or two during the week when you plan to stay home and recoup.
