Varsity Girls Drop Season Opener
Centerville, Iowa – The Oskaloosa Indians Girls Varsity Basketball team was on the road Tuesday, where they took on the Redettes of Centerville.
The Redettes outscored the Indians in the first three-quarters of play, but the Indians came back strong in the fourth quarter, outscoring the home team 23-12, but it wasn’t enough. Centerville claimed the win 48-43.
Oskaloosa’s Mary Nelson, sophomore, led the scoring for the Indians with 17 points. Junior Marleigh Denburger had 12 points. Lindsey Holmberg added 7 points to the effort, with an additional 4 points for Jillian Jennings, the freshman starter. Junior Emma Kelderman rounded out the scoring with 3 points.
Taylor Shinn, So., lead the Redettes with 10 points, with freshman Claire Mathews adding 9 more. Shinn had two three-point buckets during the contest.
Denburger leads the Indians in rebounds with 8 total. Seven of those rebounds came on the defensive end of the court. Nelson and Kaylee Johnson each pulled down 5 rebounds. Nelson had 2 offensive rebounds, while Johnson had 1. Sophomore Ava Vande Wall had 4 total rebounds, split evenly between offense and defense.
The battle off the glass went to the Redettes, with 44 total rebounds versus 31 for the Indians. Senior Kati Staton leads Centerville with 11 total rebounds, while two other seniors, Kolby Lawson, and Madeline McDonald each added 10.
Next up for the Indians, they travel to Fairfield on the 28th of November.
The Indians make their home opener on December 1st against Pella Christian.
