Two Goals by Jacobs Gives William Penn #6 Seed for Tourney

William Penn University Athletics

Oskaloosa–Joshua Jacobs (Fr., Luton, England, Potteridge HS) found the back of the net twice Friday night to give his seniors a great gift–a 3-0 win over St. Ambrose in Midwest Collegiate Conference action.

The Statesmen (5-9-2, 3-4-1 MCC), winners of a season-high three games in a row, outshot the Fighting Bees (4-11-1, 2-6 MCC) by a count of 18-8 on Senior Night.

Both programs entered their MCC regular-season finale with anemic offenses (each just over 1.1 goals per game), and through much of the first half it seemed the game would end in a scoreless tie.

That was until Jordan Hoffman (So., Hyde Park, Utah, Skyview HS) struck a shot that snuck past St. Ambrose goalkeeper Jason Gough at the 38:44 mark. The assist was awarded to Jeff Kelly (So., Ottumwa, Indian Hills CC). The goal is Hoffman’s second.

The hosts then doubled the advantage when Jacobs scored unassisted less than three minutes later.

He then put the game out of reach with his second score at 56:47 with Kelly again assisting. Jacobs now has five goals this fall, while Kelly leads the Statesmen with four assists.

Jacobs paced the offense with four shots and Sam Gurski (So., Beaumont, Texas, West Brook HS) managed five saves to post his second shutout of the season.

The win puts the navy and gold in the #3 vs. #6 First Round MCC Tournament game next Sunday with the opponent and site yet be determined.

Next: William Penn concludes the regular season by traveling to Fulton, Mo. Tuesday to face William Woods in non-conference play at 3 p.m.
