Stepter Sprints to ‘A’ Standard at Last Chance Event
Seward, Neb.–Carlos Stepter (Sr., Highland Park, Mich., Highland Park HS) ran his team’s fastest 100-meter dash of the year to lead all William Penn track and field athletes at the Concordia Twilight Friday.
Stepter finished the sport’s shortest race in an ‘A’ standard time of 10.63 seconds. He had qualified earlier this spring with a ‘B’ mark, but now ranks 25th in the NAIA with his current time.
Javaras Thomas (Sr., Miami, Fla., Miami Beach HS) and Royce Clay (Sr., Miami, Fla., Booker T. Washington HS) had also qualified, doing so in the triple jump, but both were looking to improve those marks as well as obtain a ticket in the long jump. Unfortunately, neither goal was accomplished.
Thomas had a triple jump of 44-5.5 and a season-best long jump of 22-10.5, while Clay was at 45-10.5 in the triple and 20-9 in the long.
Nick Reynolds (Jr., Riverton, Utah, Iowa Western CC) competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the final time this year, finishing with a time of 10:01.65.
Rachel Butler (Sr., Orange County, Calif., Calvary Chapel Downey HS) was the lone Lady Statesmen in action Friday. She attempted to qualify in the discus, but to no avail (131-2), and her javelin toss of 121-2 unfortunately did not improve upon her current qualifying distance.
Next: Six individuals will represent William Penn at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships from May 26-28 in Marion, Ind.
Gabriel Green (So., Anniston, Ala., Anniston HS) has ‘A’ marks in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, while Stepter now has an ‘A’ mark in the 100.
Thomas and Clay have both surpassed the ‘B’ standard in the triple jump.
Katie Burnett (Sr., Mesa, Ariz., Arizona) will compete in two events–the 5,000-meter race walk and the javelin–both of which she has met the ‘A’ standard.
Butler has reached the ‘B’ distance in the javelin.
