Statesmen Fight Hard, but Fall Short

Oskaloosa—Statesmen fight hard, but fall short to Marian in the Marian Tournament Championship, 80-76. William Penn finished the weekend 1-1, with a win over Berea (96-66).

Friday night, William Penn came out on top never giving up the lead up to Berea. The Statesmen shot 61.9% (13-21) from the three-point line and 56.9% (37-65) from the field.

With five players reaching double digits, Austin Emerson (Jr., Des Moines, Southwestern CC) led the way with 17 points, followed by Blake Walker (So., Rose Garden, Ga., Campbell HS) with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Rounding out the scorers was Davis Spielbauer and Taylor Stoutner (Jr., Keota, Keota HS) with 13, and Alan Douglas (Sr., Champaign, Ill., Lakeland CC) with 12 points.

In the championship game against Marian, Penn got off to a slow start falling behind by 11 points just four minutes into the game. With a halftime score of 45-39, Penn managed to comeback from an 18 point deficit.

Game’s high shooter, Alan Douglas led with 27 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Douglas shot 11-19 from the field and perfect from the free throw line (5-5). As a team, William Penn was 47.5% (28-59) from the field and 86.7% (13-15) from the line.

Two more players reached double digits; Davis Spielbauer (Jr., Wapello, Wapello HS) contributed 14 points and Arman Rasul (Jr., Chicago, Ill., Illinois-Chicago) with10. Blake Walker and Taylor Stoutner also scored 9 points each.

With such a strong tournament showing, Alan Douglas and Davis Spielbauer both earn All-Tournament honors.

Next: William Penn will host the William Penn Classic this weekend, playing Jamestown Friday at 6 p.m. and Grinnell Saturday at 4 p.m.
