Statesmen Compete at Augsburg
Oskaloosa–In a tournament that featured over 500 competitors, several Statesmen wrestlers recorded some success as Penn hit the mat at the Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open hosted by Augsburg Saturday.
The Open field was so large that several brackets were needed for each weight with Statesmen in anything from the Gold bracket (top bracket) to Bronze bracket (third bracket).
285-pounder Nathan Craig (Sr., Yale, Iowa, Iowa Central CC) paced Penn as he went 3-1 (two falls, one decision) on the day, placing second in the Bronze bracket.
Juan Gonzalez (Fr., El Paso, Texas, Franklin HS) also won on multiple occasions, going 2-2 and placing 4th in the Silver 149 pounder bracket (two decisions).
Two other Statesmen also finished in 6th place, Tyler Schneider (So., Belleville, Mich., Belleville HS), who went 1-2 (one decision) in the Gold 133 pounder bracket and Marshawn Lacy (Fr., Chicago Heights, Ill., Rich East HS), who went 1-2 (one major decision) in the Silver 141 pounder bracket.
Competing in the Gold 157 pounder bracket was Brandon Smith (So., Malcom, BGM HS), who also went 2-2 for the day with two decisions.
Other Statesmen that accumulated pins throughout the open include Sergio Proctor (Fr., Edinburg, Texas, McAllen Memorial HS), Roy Torres (So., Yuma, Ariz., Cibola HS), Joe Sumner (So., Delaware, Ohio, Rutherford B. Hayes HS), and Tyler Larsen (Fr., West Point, Utah, Syracuse HS).
