Oskaloosa Boys Wrestling Wins Big at Mike Halupnick Big Red Invite
The Oskaloosa boys wrestling team turned in a strong performance on Saturday at the Mike Halupnick Big Red Invite in Centerville, winning the team title in dominant fashion. The Indians scored 362.5 points to run away with first place in a large field of teams.
Oskaloosa placed six wrestlers into the finals and came away with three individual champions on the day. Sam Nelson, Colton Shaffer, and Matt Phillips all earned first-place finishes for the Indians.
At 106 pounds, Emmett Dye placed second after advancing to the finals. Dye won four matches on his way to the title bout and scored 20 team points for Oskaloosa.
Braydin O’Brien finished fourth at 113 pounds and added 11 team points after picking up a fall in the quarterfinals.
Sam Nelson won the championship at 120 pounds. Nelson recorded multiple falls and a technical fall during the tournament, scoring 25.5 team points.
Jamison Ruby had a strong run at 132 pounds, finishing second and scoring 44 team points. Ruby earned four wins, including three falls, before falling in the championship match.
Misael Gonzales competed at 144 pounds and placed tenth, scoring 13 team points for the Indians.
Trevin Griffin placed third at 150 pounds and scored 41 team points. Griffin recorded four falls during the tournament.
Colton Shaffer continued his outstanding season at 157 pounds, winning the title and scoring 50 team points. Shaffer pinned four opponents and won the championship match in sudden victory.
Matt Phillips claimed first place at 165 pounds, scoring 30 team points. Phillips recorded four falls and two major decisions on the day.
At 175 pounds, Trey Parks placed seventh and scored 27 team points.
Brock Beerbower finished third at 190 pounds, scoring 39 team points after four wins by fall.
Parker Jordan placed second at 215 pounds and scored 46 team points. Jordan advanced to the finals with five straight wins before dropping the championship match.
Kyron Smith rounded out the Oskaloosa lineup at 285 pounds, placing third and scoring 16 team points.
With the team title secured in Centerville, the Oskaloosa boys will be back in action this Saturday when they travel to Iowa City to compete in the Bean City Duals.
