If you have never seen the local TV program “One Day Getaway” on MCG and the internet, featuring local talent AJ Hodgeman traveling around the area exploring all there is to do in Iowa, then now is the perfect time to visit them on their site HERE.
AJ Hodgeman and Patryck Boberg were honored at a recent conference. The Northwest Broadcast News Association Conference awarded the pair The Award of Merit at the Eric Sevareid Banquet for their work on the Winterset Episode of “One Day Getaway”.
So I sat down with the man in front of the camera, AJ Hodgeman, for his thoughts on the award and his work at CRI.
Hodgeman was honored to receive the award had this to say, “To be recognized with that (award) by your peers is pretty cool.” Hodgeman explained that it is nice to be able to get together with people that do the same thing as you. Speaking about his peers at the conference, and when they, “take a look at your work and say ‘hey, this is pretty good.’ ” can make all those long hours you put in seem worth while.
Now in its third season, “One Day Getaway” recently visited the towns of Centerville and Cedar Falls, and as is customary, they showcase events in town such as the recent Chili Cook-off and a Girl Scout Cake Auction.
Have you ever wondered what a hard working reporter does when they aren’t doing the news, editing a story, doing a voice over or any one of a multitude of things that involves producing a video product? “AJ sleeps” was the first answer, and something I can completely understand myself. Hodgeman does stay busy away from CRI. He plays the bass guitar, as well as sings, for the Mangini Brothers. If that doesn’t keep him busy enough, he also works at the Penn Centre Theater here in town.
Working at a local theater, when growing up, was one of the influences that got Hodgeman interested in video production work, but one of his high school teachers, that taught a media class his senior year, was an even bigger influence. Hodgeman remembers it was the first year they had iMacs and he was hooked right away. Being able to be creative with iMovie and helping to edit his senior class movie hooked him.
Thankfully, it appears we will get to keep AJ around the area for some time. Working at CRI allows him, and many others that work there, the opportunity to do many different things. Hodgeman stated, “I get to be goofy on camera; I get to write music for the show; I get to write the show; I get to shoot the show; even if I’m on camera, I can still get behind the camera and shoot some things too.” I then asked him if this is, pretty much, his dream job. Hodgeman pretty much agreed that it is.
You can catch AJ reporting the news, traveling around the state for his show “One Day Getaway”, and, oh ya, he also gets to work with puppets on “The Kids Show”, which is another great program on CRI. He also writes original kids music for that show as well.
As you can see, there is an abundance of talent in AJ and he loves sharing those talents with Oskaloosa. Congratulations once again to AJ Hodgeman and Patryck Boberg for the recognition they received.
