NM Girls Knock Off Spartans
GRUNDY CENTER – Grundy Center took an early lead and held it for nearly 13 minutes Monday, but they had no answer for sophomore Breckyn Schilling. Schilling scored the first 14 points for North Mahaska and finished with 26 to power North Mahaska to a 45-39 victory. North Mahaska trailed or were tied with the Spartans until the 2 minute mark when another sophomore, Sydney Andersen put the Warhawks up 23-21. They never trailed again.
Grundy Center kept Schilling off the scoring list for seven minutes, but senior Jessica Castaneda and freshman Aly Steil added to the Warhawk scoring while the defense made it difficult for the Spartans to score.
Both teams were close in several statistical categories. Grundy Center turned the ball over 22 times to 20 for the Warhawks. NM collected 17 steals to 14 for the Spartans. North Mahaska pulled down 42 rebounds, 21 on each end while Grundy Center had 36, 18 on each end. Where North Mahaska gained an edge was the free throw line. The Warhawks hit 11-of-19 shots including going 6-of-9 in the fourth quarter.
Schilling added 14 rebounds and six assists to her line. Castaneda chipped in seven points, six rebounds and five steals with a shot block. Steil added five points, three steals and two assists. Libby Hargis and Andersen had nine and five rebounds respectively.
Grundy Center had two players in double figures. Carlie Willis had 17 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and a block while Ellery Luhring had 10 points, nine rebounds, four blocks, three steals and two assists.
