Nellie Viola Jones, 95, passed away on February 21, 2019 at Manor House Care Center, Sigourney IA. She was born on May 20, 1923 near Centralia, Missouri to Arthur and Nellie McConaughey.
The family moved to Iowa in 1926 where she attended rural schools in Wapello and Davis counties. Viola graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1941. She attended Ottumwa Heights College and graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Viola married George F. Jones on August 22, 1953 at Northside Church of the Nazarene. They had two children, Joyce and David.
Viola was an elementary school teacher. She taught at Alpine School in Agency, Iowa, Pershing, Iowa, Lovilia, Iowa, and Jefferson School in Ottumwa. After her children began school, Viola resumed her teaching career, teaching at Hedrick School for 28 years. This completed 39 years of teaching for Viola.
She was a member of the Farson Baptist Church and served as a long-time Sunday School teacher, Bible School teacher, and board member. Viola was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She was an active worker at the Congregate Meal site and served as a volunteer at Pekin School and the Hedrick Library.
She is survived by her children: Joyce (& David) Jackson of Hamilton OH, and David (& Lori) Jones of Hedrick; four grandchildren: Ryan (& Erica) Jackson, Rebecca (& Luke) Wurzelbacher, Matthew Jones and Michael Jones; two great-granddaughters, Riley Jackson and Josie Jackson; and a sister, Ruth Porter of Bethany, Oklahoma. She is also survived by many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; an infant son, Dennis; and a sister, Lila Holloway.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at 10:30 AM in the Fremont Funeral Chapel in Fremont with Pastor Jim Eschenbrenner officiating.
Burial will be in the Mt Zion Cemetery in Martinsburg. Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will begin Monday, February 25, 2019, in the Fremont Funeral Chapel from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Wednesday evening with family present to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to Keokuk County Hospice and Multiple Sclerosis Foundation NMSS Valley Chapter.
