Nellie Slagter, 88, of Branson and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at Cox Hospital in Branson. She was born Sunday, November 19, 1927 in Mahaska County, the daughter of Dick and Nellie Van Rees Van Genderen, Sr.

Nellie attended country school in Mahaska County. Following school, Nellie was a homemaker most of her life and helped on the farm.

On February 16, 1949, Nellie was united in marriage to John Slagter, Jr. in Eddyville and he died in January of 1987.

Nellie worked at Monroe County Hospital and worked as a home health care worker in Albia in the late 70’s and early 80’s. She moved to Oskaloosa in 1999.

Nellie faithfully attended the Hillside Bible Church. She enjoyed playing the organ, crocheting, quilting, gardening, canning and being outdoors.

She is survived by her son, Howard (& Diane) Slagter of Branson; four grandchildren: Andrew (& Bridget) Slagter, James (& Traci) Slagter, Nathan Slagter and Natasha Slagter; five great grandchildren: Lincoln, Martin, Bentley, Francesca and Huxley Slagter; a sister, Christina (& Ronald) Carr of Russell, Iowa; two brothers and sisters in law: Don (& Luetta) Slagter of Pella, and Melvin (& Shirley) Slagter of Zellwood, Florida; two sisters in law: JoAnn Slagter of Oskaloosa and June Slagter of Pella; and a daughter-in-law, Pam (& Jim) Konopka of Oskaloosa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons: Ronald Slagter and Jeffrey Slagter; and four brothers: Dick, Jr., Harry, Fred and John Van Genderen.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 10 A.M. in the Hillside Bible Church in Oskaloosa with Dan Kelderman officiating.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Eddyville.
Visitation will begin Friday, May 6, 2016 after 2 P.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel Friday from 5 – 7 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hillside Bible Church.
