Nancine Hugen, 94, of Pella and formerly of Oskaloosa, went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 4, 2016, while being cared for at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House. Nancine was born January 10, 1922, in Pella, Iowa, the daughter of William and Emma Van Baale Lubberden.

Nancine graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1940. She continued her education by taking Normal Teacher Training and completed her teaching degree at William Penn.

On August 25, 1942, Nancine was united in marriage to Harold E. Hugen, in Oskaloosa. Harold died on April 7, 2005.

Nancine taught school at Else, Sheesly, Sandridge, and Wright Country Schools, for many years. In retirement she served as a substitute teacher for the Eddyville School District.

She was a member of Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa where she was the Vacation Bible School Director for 35 years and was a Sunday School teacher. She served as an officer at all levels of the Reformed Church Women. She and Harold directed church camps for young people in southern Iowa for many years. She was also a member of the 5:45 club at Cedar.

Nancine and Harold enjoyed traveling, they traveled all over the United States and made several trips to Europe. They enjoyed wintering in Arizona and California for many years. They also enjoyed camping, both at the Iowa State Fair and at various parks around the state.

Nancine kept Christ at the center of her life, she was a lifelong servant of the Lord. She was passionate about educating children in the classroom and about Jesus Christ. She was always sure to be punctual and organized, as she wore many hats throughout her life everything was always well managed.

She enjoyed reading and was a talented writer. She delighted in spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her family includes her daughter and her husband, Gloria (& Keith) Nollen of Pella; two grandchildren: Marc (& Jessica) Nollen of Fremont and Marcy (& Todd) Milburn of Newton; four grandchildren: Eli and Parker Nollen, and Nathan and Nick Milburn; two brothers: Virgil Lubberden of Oskaloosa and Verle Lubberden of Oskaloosa; two sisters in law: Faye Hugen of Newton and Francene Hugen of Oskaloosa; two brothers in law: Max Hoeksema, and Dr. Melvin (& Sylvia) Hugen of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

In addition to her husband Harold, Nancine was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters in law: Helen Hugen, Mildred Hoeksma, and Ruth Hugen; and three brothers in law: Bert Hugen, Henry Hugen, and Robert Hugen.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 7, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. in the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Jon Nelson officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Wednesday after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Wednesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to Central Reformed Church Vacation Bible School.
