Marilyn Helmick, 81 of Montezuma passed away peacefully Sunday, January 17, 2016 at her home. Marilyn Irene Brady Helmick, the daughter of Oral and Mabel (Murrow) Brady, was born on October 1, 1934 in Oak Park, IL.

The family moved to Des Moines in 1939 and Marilyn graduated from East high in 1952.

Marilyn loved playing the piano and started playing at the Church of Christ at the age of 12. She actually started at the age of 4 and couldn’t reach the pedals.

On Flag Day, June 14, 1952, Marilyn was united in marriage to Robert E. Helmick. They are the parents of: Steven, Debra, Mark, Terry and Paula.

Marilyn worked at the Northwestern Bell Phone Company in Des Moines for 35 years. They spent 29 years living in Des Moines and retired in 1986, moving to their lake home at Lake Ponderosa in Montezuma. Following retirement in 1986, they owned and operated the RAYMAR VARIETY store for 11 years.

She was President of the Retirement Group at Lake Ponderosa which enjoyed a potluck dinner the first of every month.

She enjoyed giving piano lessons and working in the garden in the summer. There was no TV in those days, so they created their own fun by playing with close-by cousins and playing table games.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Robert of 63 years; four children: Steven Helmick of Des Moines, Debra (& David) Williams of Winterset, Mark Helmick of Polk City, and Paula (& Scott) Seiberling of Des Moines; many Grandchildren; Great Grandchildren; many other relatives; and many friends.

Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents; her son, Terry; and her brother, Gerald Brady.

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at the Jackson Church of Christ in Montezuma.
Burial will be held at the Sunset Cemetery in Des Moines at 2:30 pm.
Visitation will begin after 12:00 pm Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma with the family present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Montezuma Food Pantry.
