Mahaska Health Partnership Awarded Grant to pay for Mammograms

Breast Cancer Awareness

OSKALOOSA – Mahaska Health Partnership will assist women in paying for a digital mammogram. Through a grant from the Southeast Iowa Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, MHP has funds available to assist women who are uninsured or have a financial need to obtain a mammogram.

“Our goal is to provide assistance to as many women as possible so they can get this life-saving exam,” MHP Director of Radiology Julie Hartke said. “A lack of insurance or high priced deductibles are often cited as reasons women avoid getting a mammogram; we want to ensure no one goes untreated.”

The American Cancer Society recommends that women of normal risk begin receiving an annual mammogram every year beginning at age 40. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast used to look for breast disease. The exam is used for women who do not have symptoms as well as those with a lump, skin change or other symptoms.

“If you need assistance paying for the cost of a mammogram, please do not delay. Every day counts when cancer is present and early diagnosis and treatment are key,” Hartke stressed. “Utilizing the Breast Health Awareness funding just takes a simple one-page application that can be accessed online at mahaskahealth.org or women can stop by the MHP Radiology Department.”

Susan G. Komen for the Cure is a global breast cancer movement. It is the world’s largest network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. They are the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

“In addition to receiving an annual mammogram, Komen recommends women watch for changes in their breasts,” Hartke explained. “If you notice swelling, skin irritation or pain in the breast, contact you primary care provider immediately and consider a mammogram even if you are not in the high risk age group.”
