The Mahaska County Supervisors for 2012 left to right, Greg Gordy, Ken Rozenboom and Willie VanWeelden

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Mahaska County Supervisors held their first meeting of the new year with Chairman Willie VanWeelden calling it to order.

In the first step of reorganizing for the year, Ken Rozenboom moved that Greg Gordy become Chairman of the Board for the year 2012. VanWeelden seconded the motion, and after a unanimous decision, Greg Gordy became the chairman, and Rozenboom was voted Vice-Chairman.

They dove into general housekeeping formalities such as setting meeting dates as they had been in the past, with the 1st and 3rd Mondays as the meeting dates.

They also named the 9 ½ days the Mahaska County Courthouse will be closed: New Year’s Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and the Friday after, along with half a day for Christmas Eve and Christmas.

Minutes were approved of the December 19th, 2011 meeting.

Supervisors approved the bills for December 2011.

Gordy then brought to the table the recommendation of the compensation board. The board had met December 13th, 2011 with the recommendation of a 4.5% increase in salary for the Sheriff, 3.6% for all other elected officials.

After some discussion, the Supervisors worked out a percentage decrease to be more in-line with the counties union contracts that have a 2.2% increase.

The scheduled 10:00 am meeting with the University Park City Council and the Board of Supervisors involving the future of Burlington Road.

University Mayor George Toubekis engaged the Supervisors over a possible 28E agreement covering the portion of Burlington Road that was placed in the care of Mahaska County after the city fell below the required 500 residents.

Points of discussion between Mahaska County Engineer Jerry Nusbaum and Toubekis discussed how the agreement would be handled beyond the terms of the current elected officials.

The board agreed to further the discussion after contacting other interested parties, and tabled the matter for a future date.
