Danny Logan plead guilty to 2nd Degree Arson in Mahaska County Court on Friday.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – A memorable and destructive downtown fire now has some justice.

Danny Logan was accused of arson in the case that saw the destruction of the Swims building. The building was home to two area businesses and the fire ultimately impacted a third business, True Value, that didn’t suffer directly from the flames, but did have smoke and water damage along with a structural issue because of the fire.

On Friday in Mahaska County District Court, Logan plead guilty to 2nd Degree Arson, a Class C Felony, and was subsequently sentenced to 10 years in the state penitentiary.

Logan had been charged with 1st Degree Arson, Class B Felony, in connection with the May 11th fire.

Logan was also fined $1000 and faces restitution as a result of his plea agreement. Logan will also have to submit a DNA sample for future potential DNA profiling.

Eighth Judaical Judge Myron Gookin accepted the plea from Logan, who was represented by Kenneth Duker, his court appointed attorney.

“What is your plea to Arson in the Second Degree?” asked Judge Gookin.

“Guilty.” Responded Logan.

Judge Gookin then asked Logan what exactly took place “On or about May 10 or 11, 2015 that lead to the filing of this charge against you. Can you tell me that?”

“Yes sir,” responded Logan. “I tried to light papers on fire, and when I lighted the papers on fire, it ended up catching the building, and the building caught on fire.”

Judge Gookin accepted Logans plea of guilty of Arson in the Second Degree.

Sentencing took place on Friday at Logan’s request.

No victim impact statements were presented during the sentencing portion of the proceedings.

“Mr. Logan. This is a pretty expensive lesson for you to learn. Take advantage of everything that’s offered to you while you’re incarcerated because there will be programs in terms of education, and things of that nature, to assist you. We don’t want to see you in the courts again. Do you understand that?” Judge Gookin said in closing.

“Yes sir I do,” said Logan.

Logan will spend approximately a month inside Oakdale before being transferred to a state prison to serve his 10 year sentence.
