Lady Statesmen Place High to End Holiday Trip

Las Vegas, Nev.–The William Penn women’s bowling team ended a successful holiday break with another high finish at the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational on December 20-21.

The Lady Statesmen placed sixth out of 17 teams in qualifying, and as the #6 seed, was knocked out in the quarterfinals by #3 seed Midland (Neb.) 3-1.

The navy and gold posted 8,394 pins in nine regular games (no Bakers), while Pikeville (Ky.) won the qualifying with 9,045 pins. Pikeville was then ousted in the semifinals by #4 seed Webber International (Fla.). #2 Wichita State (Kan.) eventually swept Webber International 2-0 in the championship match.

Kim Yioulos of Pikeville was the top individual placer with a 214.7 average (1,932 pins).

Breanne Underwood (Sr., Treynor, Treynor HS) was the highest William Penn finisher, taking fourth with a 206.4 average (1,858 pins). Underwood’s tournament average is the highest in program history, breaking the previous mark of 199.0, set by Samantha Powell (Jr., Herriman, Utah, Bingham HS) last season.

Kirstin Newberry (So., Holland, Mich., West Ottawa HS) matched Underwood in the top 20 (13th) with a 198.7 average.

Powell, with a 179.9 mark, and Abigayle Wempen (Jr., Titonka, North Iowa HS), with a 177.8 clip, also rolled in all nine games.

Amanda Edenholm (Jr., Marysville, Wash., Marysville-Pilchuck HS) knocked down 181.7 pins per game in seven competitions and Jessica Fuja (Fr., Roselle, Ill., Lake Park HS) rounded out the team’s scoring with a 128.5 average in two games.

Next: The Lady Statesmen are off a few weeks before traveling to South Bend, Ind. to compete in the Blue-Gold Classic on January 21-22.
