Lady Statesmen Defeat Central in Dual Action

William Penn Women’s Athletics

Cedar Falls–The William Penn women’s golf team tied a school record Sunday in dropping non-conference rival Central in dual play.

The Lady Statesmen shot a 325 at the par-72 Pheasant Ridge Golf Course, bettering the Dutch score of 343 by 18 strokes. The 325 ties the 18-hole mark set three times a year ago.

Natalie Booton (Fr., Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Undecided) and Demi Coertze (Fr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Undecided) each posted scores of 79 to tie for medalist honors. A total of 20 players were in the two-team field.

“Natalie showed us all what she is capable of, but most importantly she showed herself where her game can consistently be at the college level,” Head Coach Nik Rule said. “We worked diligently the past ten days on her short game, getting her to slow down, and on her focus on creating good habits to produce results.”

“Another round in the 70s for Demi just adds to her confidence and shows that she is settling in nicely at the college level,” Rule added. “She is starting to be more creative around the greens which is giving her more options to get up and down when she misses a green in regulation.”

Maggie Yang (So., Chino, Calif., Biology) was just a shot back from her teammates, tying for third with an 80. Mayci Rule (Sr., Idaho Falls, Idaho, Business Management), with an 87, and Courtney Kronmuller (Sr., Fountain Valley, Calif., Communications), with an 88, rounded out the varsity by placing sixth and seventh, respectively.

The remainder of the William Penn roster was also in action Sunday. Danielle Giannotti (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz., Undecided) and Ashley Manhnieo (So., Las Vegas, Nev., Business Management) headed the rest of the group by tying for tenth at 94.

Presley Joss (Sr., Osceola, Iowa, Digital Communications) was next in 12th place at 98, while Lindsay Dorn (Fr., Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Elementary Education) and Samantha Lingle (Fr., Manilla, Iowa, Undecided) both posted scores of 103 to tie for 15th. Janet Kuskie (Fr., Grant, Neb., Undecided) rounded out the navy and gold lineup in a tie for 17th at 108.

“I am very pleased with all of our girls and how hard they worked preparing for today’s competition against Central,” Rule said. “We focused much of our practice this week on 100 yards and in and it paid off.”

“Tying the school record is a good accomplishment for our team, but we know this group is capable of so much more,” Rule added. “For the first time this year we had positive results from our #4 and #5 players, which is a key to our success. Beating a long-time school rival is a nice confidence boost as we head to the national preview tourney the next two days.”

Next: William Penn travels to Lincoln, Neb. Monday and Tuesday to compete at the NAIA Preview. Play will be contested at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course.
