Lady Statesmen Capture First Win

Oskaloosa—Lady Statesmen finally pick up first win of the season at the Northwest Missouri State Tournament against Missouri Valley, 63-47. Overall, the Lady Statesmen went 1-1 on the weekend with their loss to William Jewell, 65-53.

Against Missouri Valley, William Penn (1-8) shot just 37.9% from the field and was led by Katie Golomski (Fr., Milwaukee, Wis., Pius Xi HS) with 20 points.

The squad started out slow, but managed to pull a nine point lead going into half time, 31-22. Shooting 44.8% in the first half, and 32.4% in the second half.

Rounding out the scoring was Jessi Kreuser (Fr., Mendota Heights, Minn., Henry Sibley HS) with 16 points and Orielle Thomas (Fr., Waynesville, Mo., Waynesville HS) with 15 points. Thomas also led the team in rebounding with 10 followed by Kreuser with 9.

In Saturday’s game against William Jewell, the Lady Statesmen battled the first half, but the Cardinals took a 10 point lead with seven minutes left to play and William Penn could not regain.

Orielle Thomas led the team with 17 points and eight rebounds, followed by teammate Sam Abens (So., Knoxville, Southwest Minnesota State) with 14 points and four assists.

Next: William Penn travels to Fayette, Mo. Tuesday to face Central Methodist at 7 p.m.
