John W. King, 91, of Overland Park, Kansas, and formerly of Oskaloosa, Iowa, died Friday, October 26, 2012, at the Freedom Pointe Care Facility in Overland Park. He was born October 7, 1921, in Lovilia, Iowa, the son of Adolphus and Leona Jackson King. He graduated from the Bussey High School with the class of 1938. Early on he farmed with his family. On January 11, 1939, he was united in marriage to JenEtta Frye in Missouri. To this union two sons were born, Wesley and Stanley. He served in the Merchant Marines during WWII. Following the service he returned to the Bussey area and rented a farm. He also rented a farm in the Rose Hill area for a time. In 1952, he bought his family’s family farm and continued to farm it until the 1980’s. He moved to Beacon and he and his brother Junior, bought Everett Hunter’s small engine repair. He later moved the business to the west edge of Oskaloosa and became a John Deere Consumer Line Dealer, and changed the name of the business to King’s. He retired in the mid 1990’s. He enjoyed wintering and living in Mesa, Arizona for many years. John was a Mason and a Shriner; he truly enjoyed Shriner events, especially going to the parades. He was also an avid Iowa Hawkeye Football and Basketball fan and truly enjoyed taking the Hawkeye Bus to the games. John had also served on the Twin Cedars School Board.
His family includes his two sons, Stanley (& Elizabeth) King of Chicago, Illinois and Wesley(& Karen) King of Overland Park, Kansas; three grandchildren, Scott (& Kelly) King, Brett King and Lisa King; 2 great grandchildren, Dustin King and Mac King; he is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Fount and Junior King; and a sister, Edna Mae Duncan.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Burial will be in the Pringle Cemetery near Bussey. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Open visitation will begin Tuesday after 12 noon and continue until 5 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa. The family will be at the funeral chapel on Wednesday morning from 10 until service time at 11 to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospital.
